Royal County Down is in the frame to host the Irish Open in 2024.

The famous links venue in Newcastle, recognised as one of the finest golf courses in the world, last hosted the tournament in May 2015.

The winner on that occasion was Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen who beat Eddie Pepperell and Bernd Wiesberger in a play-off.

There has yet to be an official confirmation from either the DP World Tour or the club itself but a return to Newcastle would provide the perfect aperitif to The Open Championship which will be staged at Royal Portrush in July 2025.

This year's Horizon Irish Open will take place at the K Club on September 6-10, with Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Séamus Power all confirmed in the field,

The €6million event is part of a six-year deal with the DP World Tour that will see it hosted on the Palmer North course in 2025 and 2027 as well.

If the tournament does come to RCD it will be the fourth time the venue has staged the event.

In more recent times, RCD has hosted numerous major amateur tournaments including the 2007 Walker Cup, the 2012 Palmer Cup and the Ladies European Team Championship in 2021.
