One of the world’s strongest men, recently jailed for a road rage attack, has been jailed for domestic assault and harassing his ex-partner.
Ordering Sean O’Hagan (34) to serve half his 18 month sentence in jail and half on licence, Judge Paul Ramsey KC said the authorities were clear that “perpetrators of sustained domestic violence can expect to receive greater sentence to reflect the growing abhorrence of such behaviour in our society”.
The judge told O’Hagan the sentence would have been 12 months, but to reflect the “significant aggravating factor” of domestic abuse, he was increasing it to 18.
O’Hagan, from Church View Way in Laurencetown, had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault, two counts of criminal damage and single charges of harassment and dangerous driving, all committed between 10-15 June last year.
Judge Ramsey said he had been furnished with three reports from the defence including documents from probation, a psychiatrist and a psychologist which evidenced O’Hagan has a “lack of insight” into his offending.
He was assessed as highly likely to commit further offences.
Medical reports supported the contention O’Hagan has problems with his mental and physical health, issues which are only exacerbated by his use of steroids which in turn have lead to a “downward spiral” in offences.
O’Hagan has previously been convicted in relation to a road rage attack, domestic assault and child cruelty.
In court on Monday, Judge Ramsey said he had read a “poignant” victim impact statement where O’Hagan’s ex-partner emphasised his “mind games” and behaviour had left her feeling “scared and helpless”.
