PSNI officers have escaped injury when a car was driven towards them in a “reckless attack” in Co Tyrone.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident, which happened as officers were performing traffic duties during a band parade in the village of Fintona on Saturday.
Shortly before 9pm the driver of a black BMW car ignored instructions from officers in the Tattymoyle Road area and “swerved the car towards them”, a PSNI spokesperson said.
One officer was forced to jump out of the way while another successfully deployed a stinger device to puncture the car’s tyres, but it drove off from the scene.
The car was located a short distance away along the same road and a man matching the description of the driver was found hiding in a hedge after being spotted by a police helicopter.
The 28-year-old was arrested on suspicion of offences including attempting to cause grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving with excess alcohol in breath and driving without a licence.
He remained in custody on Sunday, while a 29-year-old woman arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of assault on police and resisting police was released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.
PSNI Chief Inspector Beverlie Reid said: “Thankfully none of our officers were injured as a result of this reckless attack on them. Police officers do not deserve to be targeted in this manner for simply doing their job.”
