An ashtray hurled at a man and a woman led to an altercation on a busy Belfast city centre street.

Police are investigating and appealing for witnesses following the incident on Fountain Street at 6.30pm on Tuesday.

A man threw an ashtray at another male, and a woman, which missed them, the PSNI said.

“An altercation then is believed to have taken place between the male victim and a number of other men, and the man was reported to have been assaulted,” a spokesperson added.

He suffered a broken wrist and needed hospital treatment.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident, and we are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time, and saw what happened,” the spokesperson added.
