A number of recently arrived Palestinian refugees were welcomed at a GAA club match over the weekend.
The refugees from Gaza, who arrived in Ireland just a few weeks ago, watched the all-Ireland club football championship semi-final between Errigal Ciarán and Dr Crokes in Newbridge.
The group of refugees, which included a number of young children, are among those who have had to flee their homes in Gaza due to Israeli attacks.
Around 45,000 people have been killed in attacks by Israel on Gaza since October 7, 2023, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health – this includes around 17,000 children.
More than 100,000 people are estimated to be injured and a further 11,000 missing.
Former Errigal Ciarán captain, Pascal Canavan, was among the GAA stars who backed a grassroots-organised ‘Gaels Against Genocide’ protest last June.
He was one of the members who welcomed the refugees from Gaza at Saturday’s match.
Co Tyrone activist John Hurson, known for his aid work in Gaza, said it was a ‘very special day’.
“Palestinians from Gaza, who arrived here recently, were special guests at the match in Newbridge,” he said.
“They had a fantastic day and were made so very welcome. Hopefully they have another good day out in Croke Park next Sunday.
“Fair play and thanks to everyone who made the day one they will never forget.”
Following Errigal Ciarán’s historic victory in becoming the first Tyrone side to make a men’s club final, they will head to Dublin to face Cuala at Croke Park next Sunday.
