An off-duty PSNI officer shot earlier this week in Newtownabbey was hit by his own gun.
The victim is currently receiving treatment for non life-threatening injuries following the incident in the Carnmoney area on Monday.
Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said while the police’s “investigation is at an early stage we do not believe this is a terrorism related incident”.
A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.
The matter has been referred to the Police Ombudsman.
“We have been notified by the PSNI about the discharge of a police firearm during an incident in the Newtownabbey area at around 9.30pm on Monday January 6,” a spokeswoman said.
“We are currently obtaining information about the circumstances to determine whether there are any issues regarding police officer conduct which require investigation by this office.”
