Timeline of disappearance
December 4: John Hardy flies from Belfast to Alicante in Spain for a holiday.
December 14: After ten days in Spain, Mr George has his last phone call with his family in which he was described as sounding “distressed”. He is due to travel from Alicante to Benidorm by car that day.
December 18: John does not board his return flight to Belfast from Alicante Airport and his family report him as missing. After four days without contact, the family says it is “completely out of character” for him to not be in touch.
December 19-20: John’s sister, Courtney George, makes a public appeal to help bring him home in time for Christmas.
December 21: John’s father, Billy George, flies out to Alicante to try find his son.
December 22: A GoFundMe is set up by the family to help bring friends and family to join the search and hire drones, sniffer dogs and trained professionals. Around £23,000 has been raised since.
December 25: Family members spend Christmas day searching the Cabo Roig area where John is believed to have been last seen. His father says it is like finding a “needle in a haystack”.
In a video appeal, he says: “I need locals to come help us find our son before it’s too late. I just need him home. Please, somebody tell us where he is.”
December 26-29: Family and friends continue to search the area for John, with around 50 people making up the search party. They trawl the nearby beaches and cliffs and say police in Spain have not assisted in the search.
December 30: Mr George’s brother, Darren, says the family believe he is dead and was “lured” to Spain to be “shot dead”.
“This is all linked to back home. We were told as soon as we got out here that John had been killed, that he had been shot,” he told The Irish News.
“The police here are not taking the information we have given them about that seriously.
“When we went to the police station the other day, they told us to leave. They told us to get out and that was that.”
Spanish police tell The Irish News that they are continuing to investigate the missing person case and have been “carrying out searches” since being made aware of his disappearance.
