Funeral held for missing Ballymena man whose body was recovered from river

The funeral has taken place of a Co Antrim man whose body was found in a river six days after he was reported missing.

Alastair McIlroy, who was 63, was reported as a missing person after he failed to return to his Ballymena home from a work Christmas party on Saturday, December 7.

Searches took place in Ballymena, led by the Community Rescue Service, with appeals stating he was last seen in the town’s Leighinmohr Avenue area.

His body was recovered from the River Maine on December 13, the PSNI confirmed, adding that they are not treating the death as suspicious.

A death notice said he died as the result of a “tragic accident”.

It describes him as the “much loved son of Margaret and the late Harry, beloved father of Louise and Jay, father-in-law of Peter and Laura, devoted grandfather of Logan, Abbie, Noah, Sophie, Hope and dear brother of May, Carol, Leonard and the late Bobby”.

A service was held at Henry’s Funeral Parlour in Ballymna on Tuesday afternoon, before interment at th town’s Ballee Cemetery.

Friend Derek Cunningham wrote of Mr McIlroy in a social media tribute: “Another good man gone too soon….a genuine gentleman. Sincere condolences to the family circle.”

Kathleen Ward wrote: “What a lovely fella Alastair was, God give his family comfort at this sad time.”

Mr McIlroy’s family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Community Rescue Service.
