The family of a young boy who fell ill in a serious incident at a swimming pool in Ballymoney on Friday say he is recovering well and thanked the first responders who acted quickly during the incident.

The swimming pools at Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre in the town were closed as emergency services, including the Air Ambulance charity, were tasked to the scene.

Benjamin Trela was rushed to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children following the incident, but in an update on Saturday his family said he is doing well and hopes to get home from hospital on Sunday.

Speaking to Causeway Coast Community, Benjamin’s parents, Eliza and Lukasz, expressed their deep gratitude to all medical staff, the lifeguards, and the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre staff.

Eliza said she was incredibly thankful for the support following the traumatic experience, and both parents sincerely thank the staff at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

Councillor Darryl Wilson said he was thankful for the positive update from Benjamin’s family on Saturday.

“We are thankful for the positive news regarding the child involved in the pool incident at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre,” he said.

“While it is still early in his recovery, we are encouraged by his progress and grateful for the excellent care provided by our health services.”

“I would like to once again extend my gratitude to the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, first responders, council staff, and everyone who responded swiftly and professionally to this serious incident.”
