Enniskillen man dies after taking ill while competing in half marathon in Scotland

A young Co Fermanagh man has died after taking ill while competing in a half marathon in Scotland.

The 24-year-old, named locally as Aaron Johnston from Enniskillen, had been taking part in the Glasgow Half Marathon on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to Glasgow Green at around 11.15am as competitors took part in the Half Marathon Winter Warmer Run.

The young man was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment, but passed away a short time later.

Police have said there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Emergency services attended following a report of a 24-year-old man having taken unwell at Glasgow Green around 11.15am on Sunday, 2 February, 2025.

“The man was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he died a short time later.



“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

A death notice described the Mr Johnston as a “beloved” son and brother as well as a “devoted grandson”.

It said that he had died “suddenly after completing the Glasgow Half Marathon”.

Posting on Facebook, Ashwood Garden Centre in Enniskillen paid tribute to the young man.

Other tributes posted on social media described him as “a lovely cub”, while others wrote of the devastation and shock at his passing.

One woman wrote: “I have lovely fond memories of Aaron going through his school days and had great craic with the boys.

“I’m just devastated and so saddened to hear this news.”

Another tribute said: “He was a lovely cub and when he was in the garden centre we always had a chat”.
