A rally is due to take place in west Belfast on Wednesday night in “support and send solidarity” to a family targeted in a racist attack.

Paint was thrown over a wall and the word ‘local’ daubed on the brickwork of a house in Beechmount Street earlier this week.

The PSNI said the incident is believed to have happened sometime between 12.00pm on Sunday and 8am on Monday.

Members of the community are set to gather together tonight in response to the racist graffiti at a rally organised by Beechmount Residents’ Collective.

A spokesperson said there is “a lot of anger in the area” following the attack, but that the community want to “make a stand against racism”.

“We call on all in the community to make a stand against racism, Beechmount and the whole mid-Falls community stands proudly as an inclusive and welcoming community for all,” he said.

“This disgusting attack does not represent us as a community and we can never stand by and let this fester and go under the carpet as this is a serious situation that could spiral out of control as we seen in other areas of Ireland.”

The rally is due to take place at Beechmount Street at 7pm.

Police have appealed to anyone with information, especially those with CCTV; dash-cam or doorbell camera footage, to contact them in relation to the attack.

A PSNI spokesman said: “There is no place in our society for this type of intimidating behaviour and we will continue to engage with local representatives and partner agencies around community safety.

“Everyone has the right to feel secure in their own home, and we know the people of West Belfast will rightly condemn this disgraceful attack.”
