A Co Down man has been charged with causing the death of a teenager and severely injuring two others in a two vehicle road crash.

At Downpatrick Magistrates Court, Stephen Rooney (23) was charged with three offences arising from the accident on the Coily Road in Killyleagh on June 22 2020.

Rooney, from the Drumgiven Road in Ballynahinch, is accused of causing the death of Samuel McCullough by dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily injury to two other males, also by dangerous driving.

None of the alleged facts behind the offences were opened in court on Monday, but it was reported at the time that Mr McCullough (18) was the front seat passenger in one of two cars involved in the crash, which occurred just after midnight.

Six other young people, four males and two females, were injured in the accident.

The case against Rooney had been scheduled to have a preliminary enquiry on Monday, but defence solicitor Paul Dougan asked for that to be adjourned.

An application was granted by Deputy District Judge Paul Copeland, who put the case back to July 22.
