A mural commemorating the members of the Derry family who died in the Buncrana pier tragedy is to be painted in the Galliagh area of the city.
Sean McGrotty, his sons Mark (11) and Evan (8), his mother-in-law Ruth Daniels and her daughter Jodie Lee (14) drowned when the car he was driving slipped into Lough Swilly from the pier, on March 20, 2016.
The sole survivor of the horrific incident was four-month-old baby Rioghnach-Ann who was rescued from the sinking car when Sean McGrotty managed to pass her out through a window.
Davitt Walsh, the former Finn Harps player entered the water and swam to the car bringing Rioghnach-Ann to safety.
The mural will be painted by well-known Derry graffiti artist, Razer, best known for his eye-catching John Hume Mural in Great James Street.
In partnership with Rioghnach-Ann’s mother, Louise James, the Galliagh Community Response organisation has organised a fundraising sponsored walk for the mural, from the area’s Spar Shop to Inishowen’s Grianán fort in Burt, in Co Donegal. It will take place on Saturday September 28, at 1.00pm.
When the mural is complete, all money raised from a major fundraising drive which Ms James is planning in the lead up to the tenth anniversary of the tragedy, will be donated to the RNLI, Coast Guard Air Cover and Buncrana Fire Service.
