Work is well underway on the third season of hit BBC police drama Blue Lights, with the cast of the Belfast-set show taking part in a script read-through.

The PSNI procedural was last on screens in May of last year, but both a third and fourth season were renewed even before the first episode of the second season was broadcast.

The show, produced by Two Cities Television, has been a hit since its first series, which followed characters at the fictional Blackthorn PSNI Station, including Constable Annie Conlon, played by Co Tyrone’s Katherine Devlin, and Constable Gerry Cliff, brought to life by Game of Thrones star Richard Dormer.

Created by former BBC journalists Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, Blue Lights was the most watched show in Northern Ireland following its first season, and fans are keenly anticipating its return to screens.

Filming is due to get underway in earnest in Belfast and other locations in the coming weeks, ahead of a planned broadcast date in the autumn.

Declan Lawn, who lives in Belfast, shared pictures of the Blue Lights cast taking part in a read-through of a third season script on his Instagram page.

The snaps included Katherine Devlin with fellow stars Martin McCann, Siân Brooke, and Nathan Braniff, with Declan adding the caption: “Back in Blackthorn. Blue Lights season three starts here!”

Fans will also be thrilled that for both season 3 and 4, the number of episodes has been doubled from six to 12.

Speaking in an interview with GQ magazine last year, Declan said this “allows us to be creative with the ending of season 3, and have character arcs over 12 hours, adding: “It fundamentally changes the rest of the show.”
