A pub awning partially covering the Derry Girls mural in Derry has been reinstalled just days after it was taken down.
The awning was erected outside Badger’s Bar on Orchard Street in early September.
However, it provoked some controversy with visitors left disappointed that it stopped them from seeing the mural in its entirety.
The artwork has become a major tourist attraction in the city since it was first unveiled in 2019 following the success of the Channel 4 comedy.
Thousands of people have flocked to the pub to take a selfie with Erin, Michelle, Orla, Clare, and ‘the wee English fella’ James.
Planning permission for the awning was granted to the bar in December 2022, with no objections received during the application process.
A spokesperson for Derry City and Strabane District Council told the BBC permission “did not include the awning and structure in the elevation where the Derry Girls mural is located”.
“Council has been engaging directly with the applicant in relation to this matter,” the spokesperson said.
Badger’s Bar declined to comment.
