An investigation is underway after a man was killed in a workplace accident in Co Donegal.

The man has been named locally as 35-year-old father-of-two Anthony Devlin from Buncrana.

He is understood to have died from injuries sustained while carrying out mechanical work in the Illies area of Inishowen on Tuesday.

Gardaí were alerted to the incident on Tuesday evening, and a spokesperson said the local coroner has been notified ahead of a post-mortem examination.

“The HSA (Health Safety Authority) has been notified and is conducting their own investigation,” they added.

A death notice for Mr Devlin states: “Anthony will be sadly missed and never forgotten by his loving fiancé Grainne, his cherished sons Joe and Odhran, his loving parents Philip and Una, his sisters Tara, Tina, Leanne, brother in law Ian, his granny Annie Devlin, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbours and his many friends and the wider family circle.”

In a social media post on Wednesday, his sister Leanne wrote that Anthony was “the best big bro in the world”.

His other sister Tara said in a post: “Looking down on two beautiful boys and beautiful Fiancé who adored him, Rip brother.”

Friend Rosie McElhinney wrote that Anthony was “always a gentleman” with a “big smile”.

James Kelly wrote: I’ve some great memories of Anthony he was always up for a laugh.”

A funeral service will take place on Saturday at 11am at St Mary’s Church in Buncrana’s Cockhill area, before burial in the adjoining cemetery.

The tragedy follows the death of two people, a 17-year-old male and a man in his forties, in workplace accidents in Co Cavan last month.

Last week, meanwhile, a Co Laois man in his seventies died in a farming accident in Co Offaly.
