Kayak found during search for missing man in Co Donegal

The man in his 50s was reported missing on Thursday in the Machaire Gathlán area

RESCUE workers have found a kayak during a search for a missing man off the coast of Co Donegal.

Malin Head Coast Guard Station were alerted around 7.30pm on Thursday that the man in his 50s was missing in the Machaire Gathlán area.

The missing kayak has since been found almost 5km north Toraigh (Tory Island) on Friday evening.

RTÉ report that the man is believed to be from Donegal, and was last seen around 7pm Inis Meáin island and the coast.

When he did not return to the pier, the R118 Coast Guard helicopter from Sligo was deployed, with Árainn Mhór lifeboat and the local An Bun Beag unit also involved.

With the search continuing until 3am on Friday morning, it resumed with extra support from Loch Swilly Coast Guard as well as another coast guard helicopter from Prestwick in Scotland.

The kayak was found a considerable distance away around 6pm on Friday, while the mans family and friends gathering at the pier.
