Valerri Strunhar died on Monday after falling into water while fishing off the Co Donegal coast.

A man who died after falling from rocks while fishing off the coast of Co Donegal was a Ukrainian who had fled the war-torn country.

Valerri Strunhar, who was in his 60s, had settled in the Gaoth Dobhair area in the west of the county, and was often seen travelling on his bicycle to go fishing.

On Monday evening, Mr Strunhar fell from rocks and entered the water around 8pm at Marameelan, near Dungloe.

His body was later recovered by the emergency services and taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for a post-mortem.

People from across the west Donegal community have extended their condolences to Mr Strunhar’s family and friends following their sudden loss.

A memorial service for Mr Strunhar will take place on Friday in Dungloe.
