BELFAST based drag performer Blu Hydrangea has paid tribute to Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK co-star, The Vivienne, who died suddenly over the weekend.

The 32-year-old’s death was announced on Sunday evening and has prompted an outpouring of tributes from celebrities and colleagues.

Blu Hydrangea described The Vivienne as “family”. The pair competed in the hit BBC Three show which The Vivienne went on to win in 2019.

“There are too many words to describe The Vivienne: a class act, a mentor, an absolute superstar—but to me, she was family,” she posted on Instagram.

“You have inspired me and my drag from the moment I realised how hard it was going to be to keep up with you on Drag Race.

“Sending love to those close to her and to those who followed and admired her. You are unforgettable; I will cherish our memories forever. Thanks for the laughs, Viv x.”

Former Alliance Party councillor John Hyland, who stepped down from politics in 2023 and returned to his native Liverpool also paid tribute to his “muse” on Instagram.

“No words can do you, your art or your impact justice,” he wrote. “Goodnight my incredibly talented, generous and one-in-a-million friend.”

The Vivienne is the fifth Drag Race contestant to die and the second contestant from Drag Race UK to die in recent years after Series Two contestant Cherry Valentine in 2022.
